Kate Phillips: Bio

Kate Phillips

Kate Phillips has been a well-respected Northwest singer-songwriter for many years, her music receiving comparisons to that of Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Joni Mitchell, and Sarah McLachlan. She has opened for or shared stages with Buddy and Julie Miller, Bill Mallonee of the Vigilantes of Love, Jonathan Kingham, Brad Warren, Larry Murante, and Peter Himmelman (a spur of the moment invitation). Kate studied with renown songwriting coach Jai Josefs and has co-written with other Northwest songwriters such as Casey James, Jay Pinto, and Joe Carolus.

Kate’s music is often deeply personal, and may be silly, sad, or sacred in nature. She mourns for lost love and celebrates the discovery of Love in unexpected places. She is known for poignant lyrics, memorable songs, and for putting into words what others might feel but not be able to express themselves. Her songs range from folk-pop to roots rock, with occasional dashes of country, jazz, even electronica.

Kate has performed at concerts, clubs, festivals, fundraising shows, and churches. Her music has been used in documentary videos and for live aerial dance performances. Her song “Manhatten Sky” was featured on the “Live at Madison’s” compilation CD, and her new full-length CD, Transformation, was released April 2008. The album was produced by Jay Pinto (a singer-songwriter in his own right, formerly of Bananafish).

In the 1990’s, Kate (known then as Kathy Pritchard) co-owned Seattle’s Madison’s Café and Music House, where she performed occasionally as well as assisted with music promotion and many other aspects of the business. As a promoter, she has worked with artists such as Sam Phillips, The Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, Over the Rhine, Sixpence None the Richer, The Call, Tonio K., and many more. Kate was also a founding member of Woodsong Concerts and helps to MC the annual Woodsong Music and Arts Festival on Orcas Island.

Most recently, Phillips had an opportunity to write songs for the women of the Divine Goddess Network to sing. Thus was the “goddess choir” born! The women have sung their theme song of “Sisters” in sacred places and for enthralled private audiences. Some of the women are also featured singing on “All Creation Waits” on the Transformation album.

When not writing or singing songs, Kate is a workshop trainer and a life coach/ women's wealth coach.
